Course Feedback with Dr. Colin Hardy

Dr. Colin Hardy, a cool guy and never let his strict appearance fools you.

Here are the list of questions and answers for the Q and A; a.k.a. feedback session

  1. Q: When I look at entry requirements for Masters in Computer Science (Postgraduate) or related courses, often it states “Computer Science or equivalent degree”. Is this course (Applied Business Computing) considered equivalent?
    A: Short answer, yes. Long answer… tl;dr
  2. Q: According to the program specification, we (the undergraduates) are supposed to have options to pick in between Advanced Software Engineering, Knowledge Engineering, and Programming Paradigms. However, why are we not given a choice, but stick with Advanced Software Engineering?
A: (Can’t remember what exactly he answered but it was rather simple; a decision will be made each year by both side)
  3. Q: Will it mention about the partnership between SEGi and UOS in our Degree certificate?
A: It is compulsory to state where the course was taken, however we (UOS) are given an option to state it on the Certificate OR Transcript. So, it was decided that it will be stated in the transcript.
  4. Q: (Something about continuing study in Sunderland in 3rd year)
A: Yes you may continue your 3rd year studies in Sunderland BUT you must inform SEGi earlier to avoid problems.
  5. Q: Are we supposed to receive a copy of software required such as Oracle 8i/9i and Adobe for the class; similar to software provided by the MSDN-AA?
A: Your lecturer are supposed to provide you with the software. If they (the lecturers) do not know how/where to get it, they are supposed to inform us; and we will guide them on how to obtain the software.
  6. Q: Why does this course does not offer Industrial Training since it will help the student to understand the current industry trends and shape the student’s ability to deal with real life problems?
A: It is optional for students to take up Industrial Training. I understand it’s beneficial for the student and in UOS, we do offer Industrial Training under 2nd and 3rd year sandwich but it’s completely optional for students in partner colleges to take up industrial training.
  7. Q: Scholarship for students?
A: It’s an extremely rare case, I have not heard of scholarship given to students. But you can always take up PhD in UOS.
  8. Q: We (students) always receive our assignments / coursework questions late. It might take a toll severely on our marks as well as putting the students at disadvantage.
A: (Summarized answer) If this happens, your lecturer is supposed to inform me about it so that we (UOS) could work on it to extend the coursework deadline. Lecturers does not have the ability to extend the deadline.

Dr. Colin Hardy really care about his students, regardless you are from Sunderland or partnership college. 2 thumbs up! He mentioned that he might have reviewed my assignments for CSE 202.

Overall, I am happy with this session. Sadly, there will be no scholarship for students; no chance to experience studying overseas.

If by any chance I miss out anything on the feedback session, comment below! :)

Feedback for my course

Tomorrow, Dr. Colin Hardy, the program coordinator for my course will be visiting my college for a feedback session at 10.30am – 12.00pm GMT+8 for Year 2 BSc (Hons) Applied Business Computing students.

Gonna prepare a set list of questions just for tomorrow.

  1. Why is our course only consists of 3 modules each semester? Is it really sufficient for the undergraduates to face and deal with real life problems?
  2. According to the program specification, we (the undergraduates) are supposed to have options to pick in between Advanced Software Engineering, Knowledge Engineering, and Programming Paradigms. However, why are we not given a choice, but stick with Advanced Software Engineering?

The list goes on~
